ESE2102: Principles & Practice in Infrastructure & Environment

Taken in AY 19/20 Sem 2

Project planning (10%), Lab Reports (30%), Poster presentation (20%), Final presentation (30%), Participation (10%)

This mod provides good exposure on environmental monitoring and the relevant technical lab skills, which I pretty much enjoyed. The mod consists of weekly lab sessions (3hrs), lectures (2hrs), no tutorials, and the mod is 100% group work. There are more lectures at the start of the semester and less towards the end. There are 3 main aspects to this mod: water quality, air quality and noise monitoring but due to covid19 we didn’t manage cover the noise monitoring part so it won’t be covered here.

Basically this mod allows us to use relevant lab equipment to test for the water and air quality and afterwards compare our obtained data to past year’s data to so-called “monitor” and see if there are any significant changes by doing statistical analysis. The first half of the semester was focused on water quality and the 2nd half is on air quality. Water quality test was done in Botanic Gardens and air quality was at NUS. There are 4 reports to be submitted (1 on water, 3 on air), a poster presentation on water quality test, and a final oral presentation on air quality. I would say this module itself isn’t very difficult but the competitiveness of the cohort is what makes it relatively difficult to score well. Also the profs love to see statistical data and analysis (t-test, standard deviation, null hypothesis & p-value, etc) so make sure to spend a good amount of time doing them as I’m pretty sure my group didn't do as well as some other groups due to this :( But in general, this module was enjoyable as there are a lot of hands-on and is less heavy on the theory side, and the profs are really nice too!

I feel that it is a manageable module as long as you are quick witted. I enjoyed the course and gained many insights on practical environmental problems.

This module provides us a brief overview on how we as future environmental engineers conduct planning, risk assessments and collect samples from the environment to study existing and potential environmental concerns. From collecting samples outside of class, to working in labs, this module gives us an idea of what future career would be like for us environmental engineers. This module mainly focuses on water and air aspect of the environment.

Peer reviews for group project would have been greatly appreciated in this module. Also it would be very nice of the profs to give us feedback for our presentation skills individually so we can understand why our grades differ even though we are in the same group!
